Hal Varian on “Computer Mediated Transactions” (AEA 2010)

Hal Varian’s keynote at the American Economic Association meeting in January, 2010. The talk is titled “Computer Mediated Transactions.”

Phoebe Hoban, author of Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art, will read from and discuss her new biography of painter Alice Neel. Alice Neel: The Art of Not Sitting Pretty was named one of the ten best books of 2010 by the Village Voice, included in O Magazine’s 15 books to watch for in 2011, and picked as an Editors’ Choice in the New York Times Sunday Book Review in January 2011.     I think the points he makes on Computers as Accountants about how computers will “allow us to structure more elaborate contracts and potentially improve economic efficiency” was very interesting. And earlier in the speech when he talks about testing scenarios.

    Something tells me this is a push for Wave or Google Checkout… but really, what’s the point? All I’m seeing here are examples of existing technology and why the technology is useful. Is this a 101 lecture or something? I feel more stupid now.
