DIY KYDEX HOLSTER Part 1
Whatever gun and light combination you have, there’s a handsome solution for you. That is, of course, if you want to spend a bunch of money and wait the many weeks required to fill your custom order. The good news is that you can MAKE YOUR OWN and you don’t need any fancy equipment to do it. You don’t need a shop, you don’t need a table saw, a jigsaw, a belt sander, or an expensive press to get really good results. If you want to be really basic, all you need is a toaster oven, some kydex, a gun, and some free time. Even if your first one isn’t that great (mine was terrible), in the 16 weeks it’d take to get your custom holster made, you’ll be a pro at it. All you need is kydex, a drill and bits, rivets, a rivet press, some foam, some wood, some sort of clamps (or ratchet straps, I’ve seen), a Dremel type tool, and some sand paper. That’s the spartan, bare bones list. I’m sure some of you have more and better tools that will make your process easier and generate superior results. The specific equipment is available at knifekits.com (kydex, rivets, etc). I don’t get anything for mentioning them and I’m sure there are other full service alternatives for those types of supplies, but I’ve used them a couple times and have been satisfied with their service. Good luck with your project! Feel free to post questions, replies, tips and hints, and success stories! on my DIY holsters. i use the light as the retention area. but you sir have a great idea. thanx
Dude your first one looked awesome too thanks man.
I make holsters as well. The only thing I can see you might want to think about is taping a dowel to the top of the slide for a site channel. I tried a press but did not work for me, I use the wifes foodsaver vacuum system to form the kydex now.
@cptexas1 Not just smaller, but they sit much closer to the body than other holters, and they don’t protrude or imprint through clothing as much
@cptexas1 Well, they’ve gotten smaller as they’ve evolved!
Looks great – but man – it’s huge! Wear that concealed?
Great DIY and easy to follow. Thanks for all the hard work and sharing your skillset with us.
I’m still working on it, a little bit.
My solution so far is like this:
Make regular holster. Then, take another piece of Kydex and cut holes in it so you can weave MOLLE ties through it. Heat and mold that adapter plate to the back of the holster. Then, attach with chicago screws. I think there’s a little quick video on that topic if you hunt through this channel for it.
How do you recommend making a holster that is molle compatible attachment-wise?
a .50 cent dore hinge and a section of 2×4 would make you job clamping that down TONS easier!
Ok so how thick is the kydex material you order and what other things do I need to know or get ?, I’m going to buy the kydex and all the other parts , but I still want to buy the HK usp 45 with tlr-1 holster from you ,I’ll let you know when to make it.
@Acefearkiller EVERYTHING comes from Knifekits.c o m. The foam, the rivets, the rivet dies, the kydex. They have it all, and it’s convenient.
Hey where did u get the kydex from.??
@aaronscrewme Thanks for the kind words, my friend! The learning curve of this material is really accessible. You can take it as far as you want without a huge financial or time investment. I encourage you to try it out and you’ll be hooked before you know it!
Steve from SafeArmesReview liked this video! That’s how i found it. I admire craftsmanship and ingenuity. Thank you so much for inspiring me, and others to increase our skill set and to think more critically, subscribed!
@1TacticalMedic Thank you sir! I’ve been thinking about improving my press, now that you mention it…
hey kick ass craftmanship! just an idea, put a hinge maybe a piano hinge on your press. That would be less cumbersome when you go to clamp
I use a heat gun works great (and its cheap at harbor freight)
Genius!
@joeratti I just posted a video on Kydex thickness selection. Check it out.
whats the thickness of your kydex? thanks for taking the time to make the video by the way
